Santorini private Island tour:
The order we visit the Island, depends on your wishes and the actual time.
Usually our tours start at the village of firostefani (crown of Fira), located just above the Capital. This settlement built alongside the rim of the caldera, offers a breathtaking view over the volcano. By looking over terraces above blue water, you get the impression of a balcony over the Aegean sea. This is the place with the most photographed church of Santorini. Over the last decades Greece has often being associated to the picture of the blue dome, with the three bells (symbol of trinity) and the view of the sea at the back. Enjoy this marvelous sight, take pictures, listen to the background and actual information. Our next stop leads us to the terrace of the Nomicos conference center of fira from where we have the best view on the capital of the island overlooking the cable car and the 589 donkey steps that lead to the old port.
From there on we head up north, first we see the village imerovigli (highest point of the caldera 300m above sea level), overlooking the rock of skaros (ruin of an old medieval castle). Towards the north we take the nicest drive on the Island, by crossing the narrowest part of Santorini. The road leads us to the most beautiful village: oia. Less cosmopolitan than Fira, butmore picturesque having the most colorful houses, lots of churches. There you find many shops and galleries with a lot of charm. This settlement is the wealthiest on the Island , during the late 19th-early 20thcentury there was an important prosperity due to maritime activity (oia maritime museum). Today oia hosts some of the best hotels on the Island, some offer cave suites. The architecture is praised by many troglodyte houses (cave houses). This is also the village that claims the most splendid sunsets, which bathe the caldera and the buildings into a purple glow when the sun sinks into the Aegean sea. After taking you through the village we may offer you some free time. Finally we may have a quick photo stop at the small fisherman port of ammoudi located at the bottom of oia, which is famous by hollywood films such as: summer lovers ( daryl Hannah ), tomb raider 2 ( angelina Jolie ), the sisterhood of the traveling pants ( amber Tamblyn ).
Our tour takes us now to the south of Santorini where we find traditional villages, and the most beautiful beaches. On our way we make short stops for taking pictures at panoramic spots. We discover the traditional island village of pyrgos built during the middle age period where we find a venetian fortress and some30 churches. With some luck you can take a picture with an old man riding his donkey.
We drive to cape akrotiri where you discover the Islands lighthouse, perched on the top of the rocks overlooking the Aegean sea . On our way back we walk into a grape vine field so that you discover the unique anhydrous native and not uprooted vineyards, with the shape of a basket. Our next stop brings us to the red beach located near the village of akrotiri. Here you can take again pictures of this unique scenery, with the impressive rocks and the red sand, the red colors is due to iron oxide. On our way back we drive pass by the entrance of the archeological site of akrotiri, the pompei of the Aegean Sea that remains closed for renovation.
By this time if you are feeling hungry we have the opportunity to make a short lunch-break. We recommend small local tavernas usually located at scenic places near the water, away from the crowds were you can enjoy authentic (home-made) santorini cuisine at reasonable rates.
After our lunch-break we drive to the black beach of vlychada, set next to a 3 km long pumice stone cliff that gives us the impression of a moon landscape. We continue our tour by passing next to the marina of santorini where we see fishermen´s boats and sailing yachts. Our next stop takes us to the longest black beach on the island perissa ( 6 km long) where you can pick up some sand and pumice stone, and wet your feet.
During our tour we have the option if you wish to visit a local winery and make a wine-tasting, this is included in our rates. The volcanic soil produces some of the best wines in Greece since the 17thcentury B.C. There are three white varieties: asyrtiko, atheri, aedani, and two red varieties: mandelaria, mavrotragano. The most popular and famous wine of santorini is the red sweet vinsanto, made from sun-dried white grapes aged in oak barrels, that can be preserved in bottles for a very long time.
This is a description of the places we may show you during our 5 hour tour, the time we spend at each spot and the order we visit depends also on your preferences. Of course we can see less places or other, you may also have time to swim and shop. This is a private tour that adapts to your interests, and gives you the opportunity to see our beautiful Island under the best aspects in a familiar atmosphere.
